"Why?" is a short spoken word film that challenges the stereotypes placed on ethnic minorities in Britain. It contrasts how ethnic minorities are often perceived by society versus how they see themselves, reclaiming the narrative through personal experiences. The film explores the tension between identity and expectation, rooted in the disconnect between lived reality and the assumptions projected onto us. I wanted to confront the question: What more do ethnic minorities have to do to prove they’re just as British as their white counterparts?
The visual identity draws from British gothic typography, chosen for its sense of class and tradition, paired with a minimal, patriotic colour palette to create a strong cultural resonance. For the credits, I highlighted each cast and crew members cultural background, both native and adopted; along with something they’re proud of, whether it's a contribution to their community or a personal milestone. This served to give audiences a broader, more human perspective on who these individuals really are, beyond the assumptions. It also aimed to inspire younger generations, showing them that they don’t have to conform to society’s limited expectations — they can define themselves on their own terms.
